CAMARO tickets

Sales ended at Noon on Tuesday and the Emporia chairman, Jim Kessler of Modern Air,
has tallied the Emporia Area results.  There were a total of 224 tickets sold putting
$8,960 in the Reading Habitat for Humanity build.

It takes approximately $60,000 to complete a house.

VETERAN'S MEMORIAL

This Saturday, November 19, 1 pm, the Veteran's Memorial in the
Reading Jones Park will be laid by the Kansas City Area VFW.
Bud Sterling, of KC, reports there will be members of the
American Legion and the Legion Riders, Korean War Veterans,
Disabled American Veterans, VFW and VFW Riders and
the State American Legion Commander in attendance.


Please take the time to come to the park at 1 pm for the laying
of the stone and a dedication service.


One unique tale from this project is that to match the monument
base's color, they had to wait for a stone to arrive from China!

UNITED WAY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Members of the UWay Board of Directors will be holding their monthly meeting here in Reading today.
Some will be touring the town and seeing the progress being made prior to a meal catered by Reta.
Barbara will make a 30 minute presentation on the developments that have been made since May 21.
Then they will hold their monthly business meeting.

Each Thursday during the United Way Drive, a restaurant in the area donates a
percentage of their sales to the United Way.  This week the restaurant is
Grand Central Hotel in Cottonwood Falls.  When you are able to go during the
lunch hour, the price of meals is comparable to Montana Mike's.

HOUSING AND INCUBATOR ACTION TEAMS

Both of these Action Teams are scheduled to meet on Tuesday, November 15,
at 7pm in the UMethodist Church.  Please meet upstairs as the basement is taken
with a dinner meeting of The United Way of the Flint Hills dinner meeting.

Housing can meet use the nice padded seats around the piano and the incubator people
can find a location toward the back in the pews.  There is plenty of room for all!

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition
 
  As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor.  This year will be different.  This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans.  There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands.  Yes there is!
    It's time to think outside the box, people.  Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut.  How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?
    Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.
    Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.
    Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.
    There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates.  And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.  Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.
    How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?
    Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.
    My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.
    OK, you were looking for something more personal.  Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves.  They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.
    Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip.  And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater.
    Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.
    Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community.  If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.
    You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city.  Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams.  And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.  THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Public Square Conference

There will be a state wide Public Square Conference next week in Great Bend.
The Reading Community Development has agreed to pay the $130 registration
fee for Readingites to attend.  You will be responsible for your own transportation,
food and lodging.  Contact Reta Jackson for more information.

The K-State students working on designs for the park would like to have your input!
Are there specific areas/facilities that you would like to see put into the new park design?
Walking/running/biking trail, skateboard park, basketball or tennis court, etc.

If you filed a temporary Change of Address, you will need to submit a NEW Change of Address card

Hand-embroidered Quilt

You can win a quilt that SURVIVED the Reading tornado!
The blue and white quilt was on display in the sanctuary the night of the tornado
when 38 people took refuge in the church basement.  (Even has a couple marks to
prove it!)

Tickets are 6 for $5 or $1 each.
The money goes to the Reading United Methodist Women for their service projects
in and around the Reading community.

Sunday afternoon the William Baker Festival Singers presented a fabulous concert in Prairie Village.
Barbara Schlobohm spoke about the tornado and the continuing needs of the people of Reading.
A Free-Will Offering was taken to help get homes repaired with $1,350.00 being sent home with
us.

I was taken aside at the close of the afternoon and informed that a major donor for the Singers was
going to match, yes I said MATCH, the total offering.  I'm pretty sure I know who this is and you
will recognize his name!

$2,700 will be available to help with recovery thanks to the generosity of these musicians!
Marion Jones and Pat Gundy accompanied Barbara to the concert.

DONATION RECEIVED

The Osage City Eagles attended worship services at Reading United Methodist Church on Sunday morning
and presented a check for $2,300 to be used to help the people of Reading rehabilitate their homes.  They held two steak nights and a fish fry to raise this money for the people of Reading.  What a blessing to have such unselfish neighbors!

Due to an evaluation conflict in the architecture department, the visit to Reading has been moved

A Community Halloween party is being held uptown for all the ghoulies and ghosties tonight.
Hot dogs & chips in the UMethodist Church starting at 4:30 followed by games around the Miracle Cafe

The first Community night will be held this Friday from 7 to 9 in the school lunchroom.  Bring your lawn chairs or blankets for the indoor "drive-in" movie.  Mrs. Fort will have the popcorn.  Get a look at the newly remodeled gymnasium and just relax!

There will be a discussion on the bids for removal of 23 trees along with the other tornado projects.

Public Square has planned a Community Update gathering at 7pm this Tuesday, November 1, at 7pm.
You are asked to come to the Miracle Cafe for some snacks and the latest information on action team happenings.

FREE Health Clinic to Return

Heart-to-Heart will return to Reading with a FREE health clinic on November 12 from 10 to noon
at the school.

All 18 adult flu shots and 10 child flu shots will be given at that time.  If you would like an appointment to see medical staff please let me know.

CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATIONS -- Parents are asked to provide me with your child's name and age along with the immunizations they will need that day by Tuesday, November 8.  If you are not sure what they need, give me the child's name and age.  Heart-to-Heart is working with the County Health Dept to get all of this taken care of for your child.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION

Come join the fun uptown Monday night.

Starting at 4:30, there will be hot dogs and chips at the United Methodist Church basement.
Trunk or Treating will be uptown from the school to the UMethodist Church from 5:30 to 6pm.  Please do NOT block the driveway at the fire station!

CLEAN UP YOUR  YARD DAY!

Break out your gloves & trash bags.  Walk your OWN yard and get all the stones, sticks & limbs, and
rubbish out to the dish for pick up.  (Call 699-3870 to leave a message and let the city know it needs to be picked up)  Then walk it glass, metal and other shards.  It will soon be too cold to enjoy being out and we want the town to lookin nice for those coming through this winter. 

Fill up the dumpsters!  What a great chance to get rid of that stuff that is just sittin' around!!!

Childhood IMMUNIZATIONS

The Lyon County Health Dept will bring needed childhood immunizations to town on Saturday,
November 12.  However, they need to know exactly what is needed.

Please contact me with your child's name and age along with the immunization you know they are in
need of receiving.  If you are not sure, the Health Dept will help determine their need.

Clean Up

There are piles of rubbish around town that need to be discarded.  Please load up your (and your
neighbors) rubbish and take it to the giant trash receptacles provided by the city.  If you have piles
of wood that need to be taken somewhere, call city hall (3870) for help.  (There's no wind today
and it just dampened everything....maybe you can burn it.  Just a thought.)

HALLOWEEN PARTY

Due to construction holdups, the FREE hot dog feed from 4:30 to 6 pm on Halloween will be held
in the UMethodist Church basement.  The games, this year, will be on the veranda of The Miracle Cafe beginning at 5pm.

NEW Health Clinic Info

Jorge Coromac of Heart-to-Heart International just called to say they have not received their allottment of flu and tetanus vaccines. 

If you were scheduled to get a flu or tetanus shot on Saturday, please know they will NOT be available.
He is hoping they will arrive for the Nov 12 clinic.

Blood pressures, labs and doctor appointments are still being held.

Lois Symmonds called and has 3 or 4 trees that are transplantable that she is willing to give to
whomever goes and digs them up.   Terry DeDonder believes there was an oak and a couple redbuds.

Tree Stump Grinding

Randy Wellnitz was awarded the contract for the grinding of tree stumps on public property.

(Just an idea, but....if you have personal stumps that need grinding you might contact Randy for
perhaps a "group" price -- since he will already be here with his equipment.  Just a thought!)

CITIZENS STATE BANK AND TRUST

Jaret Moyer has completed the process to bring his bank to Reading.
The State Banking Commission is reviewing it and will give an
official certification later in the month.

Cindy and Debbie are busy repapering and preparing the building
for the new bank!

Mr. Moyer will release the date for the grand opening celebration
later this month, so......stay tuned!

Grant Writing Workshop

A Federal Grant Writing Workshop will be conducted by Kathleen Fenton, U.S. EPA
on Monday, November 7, from 9am to 12pm.  The workshop will be at the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce/Pawnee County Economic Development Commission located at 502 Broadway, Larned Kansas 67550.

Barbara Schlobohm has signed up for the event and others are free to attend.  There is a maximum
of 40 participants.

NEEDED: Number of Shot Dosages

The Health Clinic staff for Oct 29 needs to know the number of dosages they should bring
for flu shots and insulin.  They also need to know which types of immunizations children/people will
need.  Please email me  bjschlobohm@gmail.com  or call, 699-3371, to tell me which you will need them to bring.  They do not store these things because of shorter shelf life and storage needs, so they will get them fresh from the company just for you.

Beautiful Queen Quilt

The United Methodist Women had completed working the squares of a beautiful queen size quilt prior to the tornado.   Opportunities to have this beautiful quilt are available for $1 each or $5 for 6.  Checks can be made to Reading UMW.  Tickets are available from any of the women -- some of whom are: Carol Brock, Jill Jones, Heather Jones, Donna Davies, Jann Briggs, Rosalee Voorhees, Cindy Wilson, Reta Jackson or Barbara Schlobohm.

Log Splitters Needed

I am trying to locate folks with log splitters that would allow them to be
used the weekend of Nov 11.  The Rotary Clubs of the Kansas City Area
are coming down to do a mass clean up, then sell the wood in KC and
put the money earned in the Reading Park Fund being overseen by the
Park Action Team ( J T Crawford).  It is a win-win activit

FREE Health Clinic in Reading

A FREE Health Clinic will be held on Saturday, October 29, from 10 am to 2pm in Reading School.
Heart-to-Heart International will bring a pediatrician, a general practitioner, registered nurses, lab technicians, a mobile lab and pharmacy.  There is no charge for any of these services including the medications! 

Diabetes testing/checkup/bottled insulin: flu shots; immunizations for all ages; blood pressure checks;
urine analysis: physicals: or time to just speak with a doctor are just some of the capabilities of these folks.

No, they do not ask for or bill your insurance.  Yes, they do want you to come for a checkup or other needs.

Call Barbara Schlobohm for an appointment time or walk-in and wait!  I do have a patient information sheet you can get and fill out in advance for each member of your family being seen by the medical personel to save time that day.

Community Member Concern/Comment

went into the bank in Osage City to close my account. It must have been the owner who was working there.

He tried to talk me into keeping my account open, telling me that a "new" bank moving into Reading was "just a rumor", that Tightwad may still be back. (LOL).

He was not very friendly. And when he gave me my money I noticed he did not credit my accounts for the interest earned this last quarter (due 9/30/11). You may want to post a warning to everyone if they close there account to make sure they get ALL their money including interest.

I'm just waiting to open accounts for my granddaughter and me at the NEW Reading bank.

Reading Bank Available

Mr. Moyer has announced that he will begin moving into the bank building on
Saturday, October 15.  They will be begin opening accounts on Friday, October 21
with an "official" opening scheduled for November 15.

SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING

As announced at the regular council meeting last week, there will be a "special" city council meeting
to go over and accept a bid for the grinding of tree stumps on city property and right-a-ways.
